How the Rain Harvesting System Works

  1. Rain Water Harvesting is directed from the roof, through ‘pre-treatment devices’ to help prevent leaves, debris and other pollutants entering the tank. Check with the archicadd experts as to what devices are required, however these should include gutter mesh, rain heads and first flush diverters.
  2. Whenever demand for rain water harvesting is detected, and under pressure from the pump, the rain water is forced through the pleated membrane media.
  3. The membrane media in the filter cartridge stops particles passing through – down to either 15 micron rain water harvesting filter system. Rain water harvesting filter cartridges will need to be replaced* when the membrane eventually becomes fully loaded with sediment and flow rate through the filter decreases.
  4. The rain water harvesting filter system also filters out color and odor that may taint the water supply, because the membrane used is impregnated with carbon. Carbon is used to reduce/remove color and odor contaminants.

How to Create the Complete Rain Water Harvesting System

  • Check the roof if it is suitable for collecting rain water.
  • Install screen to prevent leaves and debris from blocking gutters.
  • Install outlets from the underside of the gutter to prevent obstruction of water flow.
  • Install rain heads to down tubing to eliminate gutters blocking. Rain heads prevent leaves and debris and keep insects out of tubing that block water.
  • Install water diverter to prevent the first flush of most contaminated rainwater from entering the tank.
  • Ensure a tank screen is installed at tank entry point to keep mosquitoes and pests out.
  • Choose a rain water harvesting tank. Consider yearly rainfall, water usage and roof catchment area  when determining its size.
  • Attach pests proof screens to the end of all tubing to the tank screen and to overflow outlets of the tank to keep pests out and insects and ensure the tank is vented properly.
  • Utilize a rain water harvesting tank top up system to automatically top up the tank with main water when levels fall to a designated minimum level.
  • Select a rain water harvesting pump (if required) to distribute water for use inside or outside the home.
  • Install a purpose designed rain water harvesting filter after the pump to help reduce residual  color, sediment and odor.
